Submissions

 The Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON) was founded in 1975 to promote the development of the fisheries profession and related disciplines in Nigeria, Africa, and Internationally. Today the membership of the Society has expanded, cutting across related disciplines and incorporates fisheries scientists, fishing companies, individual fish farmers, fish farmers, fish industries, and entrepreneurs. The Nigerian Journal of Fisheries is aimed at encouraging needed research into multifarious development options for rational and sustainable utilization of fisheries resources and provides a forum for the dissemination of scientific findings in all aspects of fisheries for progressive development.

Author Guidelines

Types of contributions
Contributions for publication in the journal include and not limited to the following:

1. Original research articles
2. Review articles
3. Short communications
4. The original research articles should be the results of findings from original research and they should not exceed 12 pages; additional pages may attract extra page charges.

 TITLE
The title should be in font size 12, bold, centrally positioned and in uppercase letters excluding scientific names which should appear in italics. Either
scientific names or common names should appear in the title and not both. Titles should be concise and straight to the point with no more than 18 words. 

AUTHORS’ NAMES AND AFFILIATIONS
A line space should demarcate the title from the authors' names and affiliations. Authors' names should be in font size 10, bold, using uppercase letters and centrally positioned. The surname of the first author should come first, followed by initials and a comma. Names of all other authors should have initials before the surname with 'and' placed before the last author's name. The corresponding author's name should be asterisked (superscript). Following the names on the next line should appear the addresses of all authors. If authors are from different institutions, it is important to provide link numbers in superscript to the specific address of an author. Addresses should be in font size 10, not bold, italicized and centrally positioned. The email, phone and ORCID number of the corresponding author are required.

Text
Manuscripts should be typed single-line spaced using Times New Roman font 10 and fully justified with all margins set at 2.54 cm each. Page size should be portrait (27.94 cm x 21.6 cm) Pages should not be numbered but text should appear in sequence. Each sectional heading should be bold and left justified. The text should begin on the next line after each heading.
The text for the original articles should be organised under the following sections, the major sections
(ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, CONCLUSION, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND REFERENCES) should be in bold uppercase letters while the subsections should be in sentence case, bold and left justified.
ABSTRACT: Maximum of 250 words to present a summary of the report in italics
Keywords: Three to six keywords should be provided for indexing purposes. Keywords should not be taken from the title or the abstract to avoid repetition.
INTRODUCTION: Provide background information to the problem your study addressed; stating the reason(s) why you carried out the study, the problems, and the objectives.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: To include a description of the study area, approaches, equipment, and tools used. Procedures carried out should be clearly explained. (Study Area): Where applicable state where the work was done, including the biophysical characteristics of the area. Provide a map where necessary using line art drawings on a white background. Coloured scanned or photographed maps are not acceptable.
RESULTS: The findings of the study should be clearly outlined stating the trend observed. Illustrative data such as graphs should be processed using Microsoft Excel or other compatible software before transferring to Word. All illustrations should be placed immediately after the first mention.
DISCUSSION: This should be separate from results and should give a precise explanation of findings and also relate with the findings of others; giving reasons for similarities or differences.
CONCLUSION: The implications of your findings should be stated clearly and a mention of future research could be highlighted.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: May be given if necessary. This should contain information about the grant funders and the statement of conflicting interest.
AUTHORS CONTRIBUTION: This section should highlight the contributions of all the authors in the manuscript. The names of the authors should be abbreviated in line with how they appear in the authors list. E.g., AEJ and AIH designed the study; CBD experimented and collected the data. ASY analysed the data and wrote the draft of the manuscript. All authors approved the manuscript for submission.
CITATION: Those cited in the text should follow the Author-Date System i.e., last name of the author (year) for a single author, author, and author (year) for two authors, author et al., (year) for three or more authors. Use author pers. comm. for personal communication with authors; in-press can be used if the manuscript referred to has been accepted for publication and is in the process of being published. If the manuscript is unpublished or awaiting review by a Journal it could be cited as (author, unpublished data).
REFERENCES: In the reference section, list references alphabetically (APA reference style). The reference must include the author(s), year of publication, full title of paper, journal volume and page numbers. Journal titles should be italicized. The references are preferably less than 10 years old.

Equations should be typed using the equation editor.
Tables
Table titles should be written in bold but not in uppercase letters and should appear above the table and be numbered in Arabic numerals. Tables should be produced using two horizontal lines to demarcate table headings; while a third horizontal line should be provided at the end of the table. Tables should appear after the first mention.
Figures
Figure titles should be written in bold in lower case letters and should be placed at the bottom of the figure; and numbered in Arabic numerals
(e.g. Fig. 1:). Data presented in the table should not be represented as a graph.
      ii.         Review articles should follow the same format as original articles with the major headings in bold uppercase and subheadings in sentence/lowercase. It is expected to be written by researchers with demonstrated experience in the field of study (as can be seen in the reference list) and it should not exceed 15 pages. Additional pages may attract extra page charges.

     iii.         Short communication is essentially an output of a small investigation that could serve as a baseline for further study, details of new models, hypotheses, or techniques. It should not exceed 6 pages and be formatted as stated for original articles.

Policy on plagiarism
Authors should note that all articles submitted will be screened for plagiarism using Turnitin software and any manuscript with a similarity level higher than 25% will be returned to authors for further corrections before sending it to reviewers.

Handling Charge

It is implied that any manuscript submitted for publication in the Nigerian Journal of Fisheries has not been presented for publication elsewhere and as soon as manuscripts are presented for publication authors' rights are transferred to the publisher.
Page Charges
On acceptance of the manuscript, authors are to pay a page charge of ₦3,0000. It is an academic journal that publishes scholarly articles on various aspects of
fisheries, aquatic sciences, fish nutrition, biotechnology, and related subject areas.
